टोयोटा प्रियस (उच्चारित/ˈpriːəs/ टोयोटा मोटर कॉरपोरेशन द्वारा विकसित और विनिर्मित एक पूर्ण संकर बिजली (हाइब्रिड इलेक्ट्रिक) से चलने वाली मध्यम आकार की कार है. संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका पर्यावरण संरक्षण एजेंसी के अनुसार प्रियस वर्तमान समय में संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में बेंची जाने वाली सबसे अधिक ईंधन किफायती पेट्रोल कार है.[1] ईपीए (EPA) और कैलिफोर्निया वायु संसाधन बोर्ड (सीएआरबी) (CARB) ने भी धुंध बनाने और विषाक्त उत्सर्जन के आधार पर प्रियस को संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में बेंचे जाने वाले सबसे साफ वाहनों में स्थान दिया है.[2]

Toyota Japan : Toyota shows innovations in production methods

TOYOTA, Japan

Toyota says it is putting renewed focus on innovation in production methods and design after getting a wake-up call from its massive recalls.

A highly flexible assembly line that can grow or shrink over a weekend to adjust to demand was among the innovations Toyota Motor Corp. showed Tuesday in production technology.

It also highlighted special stamping that allows car doors to be carved into molded shapes and instantaneous laser-welding that adds to the stability of luxury models.

Toyota had a stellar reputation for quality until massive recalls that began in 2008.

Executive Vice President Atsushi Niimi said the recall fiasco showed that Toyota had neglected improvements in production while pursuing growth.

"When production plunged, we could see big-scale production was a burden," he said. "We needed an assembly line that could respond to the ups and downs of production needs."

Niimi and other Toyota officials said requirements for models are changing so quickly, and emissions improvements in engines coming so fast, that lines have must adjust frequently to minor parts changes.

Reporters were given a tour of auto plant anatomy never shown to the public at Motomachi factory in the city named after Japan's No. 1 automaker. No photography was allowed. But visitors were given demonstrations of motorized stamping that was faster and quieter, and adjustable casting and welding methods that had been made simpler to cut costs, save time and be kinder to the environment.

Instead of cars hanging from above, as in most car plants, Toyota showed cars moving along assembly lines on stands with wheels. That meant the line could be changed more quickly, company officials said.

Tsuyoshi Mochimaru, auto analyst with Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, who took part in the tour, said he was impressed with some of the demonstrations. He said Toyota faces intensifying competition from the resurgent American automakers such as General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. as well as from South Korea's Hyundai.

"It shows Toyota is tackling challenges, a step at a time," he said. "Change isn't going to come suddenly. But the process is going steadily."

Toyota, which makes the Prius hybrid, Camry sedan and Lexus luxury models, also showed several samples of doors that had been stamped with Toyota President Akio Toyoda's autograph, as well as cartoon creatures.

Toyota said the metal stamping technology is new and developed within the company.

The new stamping, which also produces sharper shapes on car exteriors, will be introduced for the limited edition iQ subcompact model going on sale in a few months, according to Toyota.

Toyota officials said that, despite cost-cutting, the company must stay nimble in responding to fickle customer tastes.

Also demonstrated was a new paint technology that allows different shadings without causing an uneven surface.

Officials said they hope to make cars with custom paint jobs and contoured stamping to order. No timeframe was given.

The production efforts are part of an initiative spearheaded by Toyoda for the automaker to become more distinct in design and repair its tarnished reputation for quality.

Like other Japanese automakers, Toyota is recovering from a difficult 2011, when production was disrupted by a supply shortage caused by the earthquake in northeastern Japan. But Toyoda is trying to rally his company under the slogan of "making ever-better cars."

The good: The 2012 Toyota Prius C's hybrid power train easily achieves fuel economy of better than 50 mpg. The connected Entune system gives access to online search, weather, and gas prices. The car's Eco Score screen encourages economical driving.

The bad: The car's touch screen is prone to bad glare with a minimal amount of sunlight, and too many warning screens pop up when you try to use Entune.

The bottom line: As the latest member of the Prius family, the 2012 Toyota Prius C shows off a very modern, high-tech cabin, along with excellent fuel economy, in a size city dwellers will find easy to park.


As a city dweller, I immediately appreciated the size of the 2012 Toyota Prius C, delivered to the CNET garage in a bright orange color called Habanero. The Prius C is a small hatchback, a little over 13 feet long, with the "C" in the name meaning City.

Through the brighter shade of orange, I could just make out the car's nicely styled body, with a swept-back design toward the rear. The front has the standard Toyota Prius nose bump, complete with blue-tinted badge, marking the car as part of the Prius lineup. The biggest fault of the design is the colossal taillights, which dominate the rear quarters.

AHMEDABAD: Is auto major Toyota joining the beeline for Gujarat? After Maruti Suzuki India, Indian subsidiary of the Japanese car-maker Suzuki Motor Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation is exploring possibilities of setting up a plant in Gujarat through its Indian subsidiary Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd.

If the Japanese company decides to invest in Gujarat, it will be the fifth foreign carmaker to have chosen the western state, which is fast emerging as India's Detroit.

A team of consultants working for Toyota visited Gujarat two months ago and were shown three locations, sources close to the development said. "They have seen Sanand , where Tata Motors already has a plant and Ford as well as Peugeot are in the process of setting up their units. They also visited Halol, where American car-maker General Motors runs a plant was another location," said a state government official. A company spokesperson, however, denied the development .

While the company, which manages two plants in Karnataka with a combined capacity of manufacturing about two lakh vehicles, may take time to firm up plans, the proposed plant may see investment to the tune of Rs4,000 crore. The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) - in which Japan is a partner - is also a crucial factor behind auto makers' new-found love for the state. With increase in local demand and plans to export cars from India, the company had last earlier announced that it will increase its production capacity to 3,10,000 units by 2013.
